Detachment From Results
“The sixth spiritual law of success is The Law Of Detachment. The Law of Detachment says that in order to acquire anything in the physical universe, you have to relinquish your attachment to it. This doesn’t mean you give up the intention, and you don’t give up the desire. You give up your attachment to the result.”
~Taken from the book by Deepak Chopra, ‘The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success’.
This is a chapter worth reading over and over again in my opinion, because it is the most profound of them all. After reading this first paragraph, it got me thinking about how we tend to worry about the outcome of something because we are so afraid of disappointment.
In this past week I have had a couple of conversations pertaining to this law and in both conversations it boiled down to the result of the outcome. Both people were not happy with the situation and felt obligated to be a certain way because they didn’t want to lose their integrity with their business partners and family if they really said out loud that they wanted something different.
In the end, it’s all about removing yourself from the outcome, because there is already a mountain of wasted energy in the process of wondering how your integrity is going to fit in the end. And, in reality, you would be doing a great disservice to the people at hand you’re trying to save your integrity from!
So, how do you overcome and work on this detachment?
For me, it is about letting go of the ego and allowing myself to let others express who they are; the way it feels right for them. I will inspire those same people through my writing and sharing of inspirational thoughts and finds through blogging. I always felt that if I shared this thing that I love about myself, people would look at me and say, she is sooo weird! She lives with her parents and doesn’t have a home of her own….and then she blogs about things that seem unfitting.
Needless to say, no one really knows anything about you, except YOU! And that, my friends, is all that matters.
Don’t be afraid of the results. Detach yourself from the result and deal with what’s at hand.
As Deepak Chopra puts in perspective at the end of this chapter on how the apply The Law of Detachment:
“1. Today I will commit myself to detachment. I will allow myself and those around me the freedom to be as they are. I will not rigidly impose my idea of how things should be. I will not force solutions on problems, thereby creating new problems. I will participate in everything with detached involvement.
2. Today I will factor in uncertainty as an essential ingredient of my experience. In my willingness to accept uncertainty, solutions will spontaneously emerge out of the problem, out of the confusion, disorder, and chaos. The more uncertain things seem to be, the more secure I will feel, because uncertainty is my path to freedom. Through the wisdom of uncertainty, I will find my security.
3. I will step into the field of all possibilities and anticipate the excitement that can occur when I remain open to an infinity of choices. When I step into the field of all possibilities, I will experience all the fun, adventure, magic, and mystery of life.”
My favorite is #3. I believe that I have certainly stepped into the field of all possibilities by allowing myself to finally let others know what I am doing and it feels absolutely wonderful.. mistakes and all… I’m ready!
